So, Children, Why Do We Celebrate?

During dinner last night, I asked the children why we celebrated Easter. When I ask questions like this, I always start with the youngest and go up.

Mom: “So, why do we celebrate Easter?”

Jade: “Cause we make soap”

Indigo: “Cause we make lots of soap”

Hewitt: “Cause we make soap and sell it to people”

Oh dear, I’m in trouble. But wait, those were the Littles, there’s still hope for the older children.

Greyden: “Ummmm….”

Fletcher: “Cause we’re sinners and we can go to Heaven.”

OK – not quite there, but at least we’re off the soap theme. But Emery’s coming up, he ought to know.

Emery: “I’m thinking.”

Or perhaps he doesn’t know.

Colter: “It’s Jesus’ Birthday.”

At this point, I’m hanging my head in shame. But wait – we’re up to Brett. “Miss I Know Everything” – surely she’ll know the answer!

Brett: “Jesus died on the cross and rose again to pay for our sins so we could enter Heaven.”

YES!!! I’m not a complete failure as a mother. 12.5% of my children knew the correct answer. OK, that’s still an “F”, but at least it’s not a zero.

UPDATE: Ok, Jim says I got the story all wrong and is making me put his the “correct” version. He says that Greyden was the one to say it was Jesus’ Birthday. Emery apparently just said, “No” he didn’t know why we were celebrating and kept on eating. Colter said he was thinking, and I pretty much nailed Brett’s response.

So – lest you think Colter didn’t know that Jesus was born on Christmas, this is the correct version (at least according to Jim).
