Who Taught Her That?!?

The story of how too much milk led to a funny shopping incident…

In 2005, I got dairy goats because I wanted to be able to feed my family healthy, raw milk.  We had never tasted goat milk before, but we quickly fell in love with it and began consuming it in great quantities.

When I started making soap for the family, it made perfect sense to make goat milk soap since I already had the goats.  Since the beginning of our goat keeping, we’ve always had an abundance of milk to make soap, cheese, yogurt, and drink the milk raw.

Until a few months ago.

A few months ago, we dried the goats off because they need a rest from milking the last two months of their gestation.  During the fall, we had frozen hundreds of gallons of milk so we could still make soap, but this meant no fresh milk for us.

So I did what any raw milk advocate would do… I found a man with grass fed cows and raw milk that was milking through the winter!  So we had lots of good cow milk to drink.

And then, we finished our supply of frozen milk about two weeks before the goats were due to freshen.  But at this point, our soap inventory was much lower than we wanted it to be.

So, we decided that all the goat milk would go to soap; we would continue drinking the raw cow milk; and the baby goats would drink whole cow milk from the store (it is healthy for them and you don’t have to worry about them getting any goat diseases).

The problem was that we had too many types of milk and the children were getting confused as to what milk went where.  So Jim (the milk manager) started calling the goat milk – “goat milk” (original, I know), the raw cow milk – “cow milk”, and the store-bought stuff – “crap milk”.

I know, it’s not the nicest of words, and we probably shouldn’t have taught our children the word “crap”, but well… we did.  (note: Jim adds that he didn’t mean for it to be called that, he just said it to me one day and it stuck).

So, we’ve been differentiating between the milk like this for several weeks.  Fast forward to a couple of days ago.  Grandma, Indigo, Jade and I are shopping at JayC.  Jade is in the cart and as we round the dairy aisle, she yells out to me, “Hey Mom!  Do we need any crap milk?”

I just burst out laughing.  All heads were turning in my direction, but it was too funny to be embarrassed.  So I just laughed and laughed and laughed.

Jade looked at me for a moment, and then she started laughing too.

Which is doubly bad.

Because now she not only knows the word “crap”, but she thinks it’s funny.

  1. Ha ha!!! Hey my cousin uses that word too to describe “bad unhealthy” food. Her boys will ask “mamma is this crap?” or tell her that it is because they know better-which in my book is a very smart cookie!!!!
