Parenting Help That Works

Have you ever found yourself saying to your children, “Because I told you so!”?   That sentence might work with toddlers, but it doesn’t work nearly as effectively with older children.

Jim and I instead use the phrase, “Because God told you so.”  And we have Bible verses to back it up.  During the podcast series on Parenting with Scripture, I mention some of the verses that we regularly use.

Here is a partial list, in no particular order.  I’ll try to add to it as I use additional verses with the children.

  • A cheerful heart is good medicine.  Prov 17:22
  • Do not be wise in your own eyes.  Proverbs 3:7
  • Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.   Ecclesiastes 9:10
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  Philippians 4:13
  • Do not repay evil for evil. Romans 12:17
  • Be anxious for nothing. Philippians 4:6
  • And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4
  • Do everything without grumbling or arguing. Philippians 2:14
  • God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7
  • Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.   1 Thessalonians 5:11
  • Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
  • Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34
  • So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.  Matthew 7:12
  • Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21
  • Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Psalm 34:13
  • Even a child is known by his deeds. Proverbs 20:11

  1. I have three kids and we are a Christian family. However, I have only recently started using scripture in my parenting to where I quote scripture for my kids. I love this method the best. Thank you for the interview on the podcast.

  2. We’ve yet to use scripture with our boys but have been talking to them about the gifts God has given them and how it is wasteful to not use them in helping others and being kind. I love the list.

    • I agree with that thought completely!! It’s so important to give our children a desire to help others. And it’s so much easier when we start young. 🙂 PJ

  3. Great advice! I’m printing this and marking these pages in my Bible for easy reference now.

  4. We use Bible verses regularly in our family life, but I have to admit that I want to get past the “Children, obey your parents” and “God loves a cheerful giver” (teaching them to share) and “Do all things without complaining and disputing” 🙂 We have one Bible verse memory book book that our 4 year old especially loves: My ABC Bible Verses by Susan Hunt. Thank you for sharing your family verses!

    • I’m very glad to! I hope they help your family as much as they help ours. 🙂 PJ

  5. Hi! I just have to say I am so happy I found your blogs/store/webpage/everything! I was simply doing an internet search for soaps that will help eczema. The search was for a friend and I am convinced I have found what they, and also our family needs! I have now been up for and extra hour and a half reading blogs and delighting in the gift of you being a family that loves Jesus. This is my favorite blog. I am so encouraged by it and will use these scriptures with my daughter! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    • Thank you so much for sharing that with me, Shawna! It means a lot to me that it has made a difference for you! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you – we had company for two weeks straight and I got very far behind as you can imagine. 🙂 PJ
