Ask a Jonas – Hewitt’s favorite goat

We get asked lots of questions when we’re doing farm toursselling soap at craft fairs, or simply running errands.  Since most of those answers are heard only by the person who asked, we decided to share some of the common questions here on the blog.  And of course you can ask a question of your own!

Jacquei asks:  Hewitt, what is your favorite goat?

Ask a Jonas hewitt favorite goat_blog

Hewitt:  My favorite goat is ZuZu.  She is very sweet.  She has a biggest family that we have.  She has been having triplets.

Front Family Zuzu 2_blog

I milk her triplets from two years ago.  Their names are Zaphire, Zenith,  and Zipporah.  I still milk ZuZu.  ZuZu right now is giving not as much milk, because it is getting time to stop milking them so she can have more milk for her kids.  Zentih, Zaphire, and Zipporah are still giving as much milk as they usually do.  They haven’t dropped yet.

SunshineFan asks:  Do you think you are too young to work?

Jade:  I don’t think I am too young to work.  I’ve been helping my family since I was, like, 3.   We spend time working, but we spend more time having fun.  Everybody here makes sure I get my reading done and some work done.  I only spend part of my day in the soaproom.  I like to go from table to table talking to different employees and family.  I’ve learned how to work and talk at the same time.  Hewitt and I like to tell stories when we are working together.  It makes the time go faster and we still get a lot done.

Emery, how do I use the lotion stick? ~Joyce

Hi Joyce.  I’m so glad you asked.

A lotion stick is kind of like a large lip balm.

Applying the lotion stick is super easy.  In the winter, I like to warm the lotion stick up between my hands by rubbing it back and forth between my palms.  Then when I take the lid off, it spreads really easily.

I like to put it on my knuckles, fingertips, and elbows because those are the place that get dry.  Other places I use it are my heels and knees.

We also have a video that shows you how to apply the lotion:

Ask a Jonas hewitt how many goats_blog

Hewitt, how many goats do you have? ~Stacy

We have 42 goats.  Right now we are milking 15 does – that’s another name for a girl goat.

We had a buck in with all the does, to get them pregnant. A buck is the name of a boy goat.  I think we have 5 or 6 bucks.  They can get rather big.  They are almost always hairy and  stinky.

Bucks don’t have to have beards, but does don’t either.  Does can have beards, so can bucks.  But not all goats have beards.  Some of ours do, but not all of them.

In the Spring all our does should have babies.  That will be a super duper duper busy time. We’re going to have a lot more than 42 goats then! We might have over 50 babies!

Jade, how many times a day do you sign your name? ~Dan and Ann

I don’t know, but it is a lot.  Sometimes I just do it a few times a day.  Sometimes I do it like a hundred times.  If we have been on tv or the radio, it can be way more than that. On those times it sometimes feels like my hand falls off. We race to see who can sign the most invoices, but I don’t usually win. I’m still kinda slow at my writing.  It is hard sometimes to be excited about signing my name, but I still do it because the customers like it a lot.

Indigo, do you have a favorite goat? ~Barbara

Yes, my favorite goat is probably one of the goats born on my birthday. My birthday is in the end of February, which is during Kidding Season, which means I most of the time have a baby born on my birthday! My birthday goats are Valley, who’s one of our big goats, Belle, and Mermaid.

Minnie and Marcus, Mermaid’s brother and sister, were also born on my birthday, but we sold them because we didn’t need that many birthday goats.  Largo was born on my birthday too, but we sold him too. I still have three birthday goats though, which is more than anyone else has! I’m lucky that way.

Ask a Jonas-emery_favorite job_blog

Emery, what is your favorite job? ~Teresa

I like working at Goat Milk Stuff and my home because I get to be with my family, and because I have the choice to work inside or outside.  It depends on what is needed, so I get to have a lot of variety in my jobs.  I get to do things like working in the garden, working with the goats, working in the soaproom, or working in the house.

In the garden, I weed, train plants onto trellises, and harvest everything.  I definitely like harvesting the best.

In the barn with the goats, I milk, clean, and feed them.  I prefer milking of those three.

In the soaproom, I make salve and help when we have a lot of orders.  I really like making salve.

In the house, I clean, cook dinner, and experiment with desserts.

I like experimenting with desserts best of all my jobs! It’s a lot of fun, and the family likes it when I do that one too. 😀

Ask A Jonas – Brett’s Thoughts about Driving

We get asked lots of questions when we’re doing farm toursselling soap at craft fairs, or simply running errands.  Since most of those answers are heard only by the person who asked, we decided to share some of the common questions here on the blog.  And of course you can ask a question of your own!

Brett, how do you like being able to drive? ~DynamicKitty

I love being able to drive – but I don’t like driving itself. When I’m driving I get knots in my shoulders because I’m so tense, and the longer I drive the worse it gets. I have no idea why it happens, but it does! The other day I had to cross the bridge into Louisville for the first time, with all of the construction and traffic… lets just say that Colter spent quite some time rubbing the knots out of my shoulder after that. I’m finally getting to the point where driving to college doesn’t make me tense up, but driving over the bridge wasn’t fun.

Because Colter and I are going to college together, he’s become my driving buddy, and I don’t know what I’d do without him. Colter is the DJ, the air conditioning and heat manipulator, and the person who takes care of all the phone calls and texts from Mom. I don’t touch my phone while I’m driving (it goes in the cup holder farthest from me) so he is what I call the “Chief Communicator”. He also hands me snacks on our way home from college when we’re both starving because we were in class for several hours. It’s pretty handy. 😉

Being able to drive is great – I’m able to do what I need to do, without having to wait for a ride or anything. While I don’t really like doing it, I know that it’s a necessary skill to have, and I’m grateful that I’m able to do it!

Ask a Jonas — Greyden & Growing Up

We get asked lots of questions when we’re doing farm toursselling soap at craft fairs, or simply running errands.  Since most of those answers are heard only by the person who asked, we decided to share some of the common questions here on the blog.  And of course you can ask a question of your own!

Greyden, what do you want to do when you finish school? ~Cindy

Greyden:  Well, I know I don’t want to go to college.  But Mom might make me.   I would like, a lot,  to keep working with the goats and Andrew.  Andrew is an old friend from NJ that came out to help us.  He works in the barn with me.

I’d rather stay in the barn than go to college because I love the goats.   I talk to them as I’m working.  Sometimes I can understand what they reply.  The goats are very important to our business.  Everything we do is based off the goats’ milk and the better we treat them the better they milk.  So it is important that I do a good job.

Hewitt, if you could create a new soap scent, what would it be? ~EFranks1985

Hewitt:  That is really really hard.   I think I would call it WAR soap.  It would smell like dirty boys with wooden swords “play” fighting!   I think everyone who orders it should get a wooden sword or shield.    When you’re fighting you get really dirty.  So when you use that soap, you’ll still smell like you’re fighting but you’ll be clean.  I’d paint it like two people were fighting with wooden swords. It would be the awesomest soap ever!

Jade, what do you like about learning to read? ~Ryan

I’ve been learning how to read right now and it’s been really fun. I like reading because it’s fun to read and once you learn to read you can read super fun books that are super large.

You can have lots of fun with all the books you read. So far I have read the Phonics book, The Tales Of Virtue Book, God Loves Me Bible, The Beginner’s Bible, and I am reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle. And I love all the books I’ve been reading. I also have been reading the Corduroy books and the Little Critter books and the Dr. Suess books. Oh, and the Billy And Blaze books. They’re super fun books.

Colter, how is your driving going? Do you like learning to drive? ~Elaine

According to Indiana law you have to get 50 hours logged before you can take your driver’s test.  I’ve gotten four of those with Dad.  He says when I get 6-8 hours then I can start driving my siblings which will make it much easier to get my hours. It will make it much easier since I rarely go anywhere without my brothers.  I like learning to drive, maybe not as much as the average teenage boy would, but I’m not counting down the days.

Ask A Jonas – Do The Kids Like Their Unique Names?

We get asked lots of questions when we’re doing farm toursselling soap at craft fairs, or simply running errands.  Since most of those answers are heard only by the person who asked, we decided to share some of the common questions here on the blog.  And of course you can ask a question of your own!

Ask a Jonas- thoughts on names_blog

Jonas Kids, what is it like having such unique names? Do you like it?  ~Kim

Brett: I love my name. The only downside is when everyone thinks that I’m a guy, because my name is typically a guy name. We’ll get emails saying that “Brett is such a nice young man, I’m so glad he signed my invoice” and stuff like that. It’s kinda funny, most of the time. So are the ways people spell my name. I’ve seen it spelled Britt, Brat, Bratt, and my personal favorite, Bertt. But I do like that I’m the only Brett that most of my friends know. It’s not like some other names – for instance, I know four Josh’s. That’s confusing! LOL
Brett
Colter: I never really saw my name as unique – I mean, I know it’s not your normal John, or Josh, or something like that. I don’t normally get confused with other people, which is nice.  I enjoy having a different name.

Emery: I’ve never really thought about it being unique.  I know of three other guys named Emery, so it just doesn’t seem too different.  They don’t all spell it the same way I do, but they all sound the same.   I don’t know anybody with the name “Bob” so that seems more unique than Emery.

Fletcher: It’s really nice having a different name, because even though I’m mixed up with Emery and Greyden, my name is always different, and people can learn the difference. It’s really fun having a unique name because then if you find someone else with the same name, it’s really cool.

Greyden: I’ve never met somebody with my name.  It is kind of cool when people say it is a cool name.  My name was the only one not in the 1000 Baby Names book.   And it is spelled with two “E”s.

Hewitt: I think it’s cool that I’m the only Hewitt I’ve ever met in my entire life and I think it’s cool that most of my family hasn’t met anyone else of their names. I like having my name, but sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I had a different name. I just think it would be strange, to have a different name. I like it, that Mom and Dad called me Hewitt.

Indigo: It’s really fun, having a name that no one else has, and I have a really cool name. The best thing about it is that my name is my favorite color – purple! Most people don’t have their favorite color as their name.

Jade: I think it’s cool, in a way, that everyone pretty much knows my name and it’s really cool that all of my siblings have names that no one has met anyone else with that name. I have not met another Jade, which is very cool, but Indigo and Emery have met other Indigo’s and Emery’s. So it’s really cool that I get to be the only one that I’ve met.
