Homestead Happenings January 2019

January is our chance to get away to unwind and recuperate before kidding season begins in February. Normally, we go somewhere warm for a couple of weeks and enjoy the sunshine before going back to brave the cold. This year, however, we decided to take a much longer trip, one that we've been hoping to take for quite some time.

We went to Washington D.C., the first time any of the children have been there. Brett, Mason, and Landon joined us for that part of the trip, and despite the shutdown we were able to tour the Pentagon, Capitol Building, and the Library of Congress. We visited the Holocaust museum, the African American Civil War Museum, and the US Botanic Garden. Of course we also walked the entire National Mall to see all of the monuments and the White house.

At the Capitol, our Congressman, Trey Hollingsworth, even brought us out onto the Speaker's balcony for a picture with all of DC behind us!

Although DC was a focal point, we made many other stops while we were "back East," visiting friends and family in North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey and New York. Another focal point was Jim's hometown in New Hampshire. We visited Jim's family and friends, went skating, skiing, sledding, and had a wonderful time playing in the snow.

We came back to the farm for a weekend to do laundry and switch our winter gear for bathing suits, and headed down to Florida to visit my parents for Poppy's 80th birthday.

Landon continued to grow big and strong! He turned two months old on the 15th, and at that time weighed 13 lbs and was 24.5 inches long. He's started to talk more and more and and has started to laugh, though smiles are still rare for anyone other than Mommy and Daddy.

He got to meet his first baby goats (click here to watch it) and wasn't too sure about it - he looked pretty cute in his baby coveralls though!

The puppies, Castle and Cagney & Lacey, are also growing big and strong and they absolutely loved their first snowstorm.

They had a blast following Thor around and discovering the differences that snow makes to their territory.

We love watching them grow and can't wait to see how big they'll get!

Overall, we had a fantastic January, and we're excited for February and the start of the 2019 Kidding Season!
