Where's the Goat Milk?

solid lotion and natural deodorant

At Goat Milk Stuff, we believe that goat milk is incredibly wonderful stuff. Whenever possible, we prefer to use fresh, raw goat milk. But since bacteria and nasties will grow in liquid goat milk products, we make solid lotions and lip balms with dehydrated goat milk. The reason is simple - we want to do what's best for your skin!

What happens if you leave milk sitting out on the counter?  It goes bad.

Bacteria and other nasties can begin to grow in the milk if it is not properly stored and refrigerated.  This (obviously) is not very good for you.

The reason we can add milk to goat milk soap without it going bad is that soap goes through a chemical reaction called saponification. This reaction takes the inputs and produces soap and glycerin as the outputs. The properties of the milk are in the soap, but it's no longer milk, so it doesn't spoil or grow bacteria.

Unfortunately, lip balms and lotions do not undergo this same reaction. Because we do not add any liquid to the solid lotions or lip balms, bacteria does not grow in them. If we used raw goat milk, we would have to add chemical preservatives and the benefits of the raw goat milk would be negated by the presence of the preservative. In contrast, our solid lotions and lip balms are safe to use without any preservatives required because we use dehydrated goat milk instead.

At Goat Milk Stuff, we do not use any chemical preservatives because we do not feel that this is natural or healthy for your skin.  And the testing I am aware of shows that "natural" preservatives do not do a sufficient job at preventing nasties from growing in real-world situations.

While we believe that raw goat milk is a wonderful addition to soap and has lots of benefits, we believe adding it to lip balm or lotion isn't the best choice because any benefit you would receive from the raw goat milk would be outweighed by the chemical preservatives we would need to add.

So enjoy your goat milk soap with lots of healthy, raw goat milk added, but avoid it in lotions or lip balms.

Margie

I LOVE GMS lip balm!! I have tried Many lip balms but believe me this is The Best. I live in Vermont and during the cold months we have our fireplace going almost 24/7 which dries out my skin And lips.using a lip balm when goin out in the below freezing temps is a must to save lips from chapping. I apply it to my lips Always before going out. I also apply it Every night all year before I go to bed and Believe me, my lips are so soft and moist when I wake up each morning. I might apply once more early afternoon depending on the season. I Will Not use any other lip balm. I have tried all the flavors and I Love all of them. And, oh yes, my children and grandchildren look forward to the addition of a bar of GMS soap and their favor lip balm flavor to their Christmas money!
