Why is Natural Lip Balm Better?

If there’s a skincare product everyone has used at least once, it’s got to be lip balm. You might even have a tube or two in your handbag or pockets right now.

Glide it on, and you receive instant relief from dry, chapped lips. Feels good, right? What might not be so good is the ingredients in many commercial lip balms, as we found out when we explored what makes natural lip balms so special.

The benefits of natural lip balms include the fact they’re made with naturally moisturizing ingredients, aren’t tested on animals, and are good for not only your lips, but also the environment. Keep reading to learn more about these advantages.

The Dangers of Commercial Lip Balms

Before we dive into what makes natural lip balms better than their commercial counterparts, it makes sense to shine a spotlight on those products first.

Tubes or pots of commercial lip balm may be small, but they’re packed with a lot of ingredients. One popular brand of lip balm, for example, lists the following:

Camphor, lanolin, paraffin, fragrance, octyldodecanol, white wax, cetyl alcohol, carnauba wax, light mineral oil, oleyl alcohol, titanium dioxide, isopropyl lanolate, isopropyl myristate, phenyl trimethicone, a rachidyl propionate, Yellow 5 Lake, Red 6 Lake

Isopropyl lanolate is a chemically modified form of lanolin, while Red 6 Lake and Yellow 5 Lake are dyes.

Other synthetic colors, such as FD&C Blue 1 and Red 33, found in makeup and body care products, may deposit toxins on your skin, such as parabens. Parabens are preservatives that may interfere with the way your hormones work.

Commercial lip balms can also contain fragrance or propyl gallate, which can make your lips tingle. So that feeling doesn’t necessarily mean that the product is working, but it could be irritating your lips.

Once you’ve applied lip balm, have you ever felt like you need to reapply it again a few minutes later? This may be the result of common humectants, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, in the product. They draw moisture from your lips, so you reapply more lip balm, which then pulls more moisture from your lips, creating a cycle — which may then include spending more money on even more lip balm. Many commercial lip balms also contain sugars which cause you to lick your lips, creating the same cycle.

Another issue with many commercial lip balms is that it’s hard to know just from the packaging and label how it was made, for example, whether it was tested on animals.

Natural Lip Balm Ingredients

We like lip balms made with natural ingredients — not ones made in a lab — because you don’t have to worry about what possible toxins you’re putting on your lips. The ingredients are ones you’re probably familiar with, too. These include:

  • Beeswax
  • Shea butter
  • Cocoa butter
  • Mango butter
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Dehydrated goat milk

Beeswax has been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, while avocado oil is excellent for dry, damaged or chapped skin. Almond and coconut oils may offer protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Why goat milk? We think you’ll love it as much as we do because it’s rich in lactic acid and various fatty acids. Lactic acid acts as an exfoliant, and it’s full of vitamins A, B, E, and D, and minerals like selenium, zinc, and iron. Meanwhile, fatty acids moisturize your lips, keeping them hydrated all day long.

Vitamins A and E, as well as zinc and selenium, contain antioxidants, which may prevent free radicals from damaging cells. Mango butter is rich in another antioxidant vitamin, vitamin C, and it helps soften skin.

Look for these nourishing ingredients in your lip balm. They also do a great job locking in moisture while allowing your lips to “breathe” at the same time.

Natural Lip Balm Benefits

The advantages of natural lip balm don’t end with the vitamins, minerals, and moisture they provide. Other benefits include:

  • No filler ingredients that add bulk instead of value
  • Identifiable ingredients on a short, easy-to-read list
  • No toxins, dyes, harsh chemicals, or fragrances
  • Non-irritating (unless you’re allergic to an ingredient)
  • Cruelty-free/not tested on animals
  • Soothes dry, chapped lips, leaving them soft and hydrated
  • Protection from the cold, sun, and wind
  • Fewer ingredients, thereby limiting the impact on natural resources
  • Not processed in a factory that emit pollutants into the air
  • Value for money — no feeling like you need to reapply it every few minutes
  • Can be used as a lipstick primer

That’s a lot of goodness packed into one little tube!
