Laundry pods, those colorful, convenient little packets, have become a popular choice for many households not just across the country but globally too. But are they as harmless as they seem? We take a deep dive into the world of laundry pods.

Clean is an amazing smell! When I washed my clothes in other detergents they always used to smell perfumed, but not clean." - Kimberly S. |
What are Laundry Pods?
Laundry pods are pre-measured detergent packets designed to simplify the laundry process by feeding what is deemed to be the perfect mix of chemicals into your washing. These concentrated cleaning agents come in a variety of scents and formulas.
As a relatively new household product that came to the fore in the early 2010’s from Procter & Gamble as ‘Tide Pods’ the long-term environmental and health impacts are still being studied, but the consensus, as with all things chemical, are generally considered to be negative.
What’s in Laundry Pods, are they safe?
Laundry pods typically contain a combination of surfactants, enzymes, optical brighteners, bleaches and fragrances. While these ingredients are effective in cleaning clothes, they can also be incredibly harmful if ingested or come into contact with eyes or skin.
The damage that laundry pods can do to the human body is so great that a study published in Clinical Toxicology, showed that between 2014 and 2022, there had been 114,826 instances of poisoning reports from laundry pods in the US alone. That is some c. 40 cases per day.

What is most alarming about the number of calls fielded by the Poison Control Centers is of all of the reports of poisoning, over 86% of these instances were reported to involve under 6 year-olds.
What’s the Natural Alternative to Laundry Pods?
When you use commercial sprays, wipes, scrubs, laundry detergents, and polishes to clean your home and clothes, you are inadvertently putting toxins into your home environment. This is counterproductive, as most people utilize these chemicals to remove toxins from the home and its contents.
Even those laundry pods that are strong and ‘clean’ smelling such as lemon and pine scents, are created by toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
So, what is the alternative? That’s an interesting question because, after many years of research we believe, here at Goat Milk Stuff, we have found a natural alternative to chemical cleaning agents.
