As a goat farming family, we are very active on the farm. Our extensive vegetable gardens require much time to grow and care for our food and goat milk products. One of the plants that I have yet to grow, but really want to, is lemongrass.
This ornamental grass likes it hot and will grow as a perennial in hot climates. In Indiana, we would need to bring it in the house to over-winter. It offers health benefits and serves as tasty fresh herbs for the kitchen. It can be used to make delicious soups, stir fries and even lemongrass tea. It’s especially good if you are having digestive problems.
Lemongrass essential oil is extracted from the lemongrass plant and is an excellent addition to our goat milk products. Before we delve deeper into the intricacies and benefits of lemongrass essential oil, let’s first learn about its extraction process.
"I just found my favorite. The Lemongrass soap leaves my skin feeling soft and fresh. An added benefit has been that it relieves some insect bites I recently got." - Jane B. |
How is Lemongrass Essential Oil Created?
Lemongrass essential oil comes from lemongrass, an aromatic grassy plant native to tropical and sub-tropical areas like Asia, Australia and Africa. Due to its numerous benefits and versatility, lemongrass is transplanted worldwide. The plant can grow abundantly in areas whose conditions mimic its native land. A lot of heat, moisture and light are some of the requirements for this grassy plant to thrive.
Lemongrass is a tropical island plant in the grass family. Its leaves are green in color with sharp edges mimicking the lawn grass but much larger. Harvesting lemongrass is easy with the help of sickles. These grassy blades are cut about 10 cm above the ground and left to wilt before transportation to the oil extraction site.
The oil is stem-distilled from the harvested fresh or partly dried lemongrass. Lemongrass essential oil from the distillation process is yellow or amber, producing a sweet and citrus-like scent. After stem distillation, the distillate, a mixture of oil and water, undergoes further distillation and decantation to extract pure oil.

"Wow! :) I have never tried a bar of Dish Soap before but so glad I did! I was almost out of dish soap and was looking for a healthy alternative for my home. I wasn’t sure how a bar would lather enough, but I honestly think it lathers better than the liquid soap I was using which says it’s concentrated! Around this time of year (springtime), I also usually have a lot of ants trying to come in my kitchen due to a tiny area near the window over the sink, but I didn’t have the usual “scouts” and I’m wondering if it’s because of the essential oils in the soap which is left on the counter nearby. I’ve only been using it a little over a week, but if you’re on the fence and want to try a healthy alternative, it’s definitely worth trying at least once. Thank you! :)" - Pamela P. |
