Our soaps are made on our 36-acre family farm in Scottsburg, Indiana, using raw goat milk from our own herd of Alpine and Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. Because we care for the goats, milk them, and make the soap on the same farm, we know where one of our most important ingredients comes from and how it has been handled.

Why I Started Making Goat Milk Soap
Our soapmaking story began in 2005.
One day, I was bathing several of our children when I turned over the bottle of baby wash we had always used and read the ingredient list. I was surprised by how many ingredients I did not recognize.
I had spent years thinking carefully about the food I gave my family, but I had never paid the same attention to what we were using to wash our skin.
I decided to learn how to make soap using ingredients I understood and trusted.
We already had dairy goats, so when I found soap recipes that used water, I decided to replace the water with raw goat milk from our own goats. I loved the creamy lather and the way the finished soap left our skin feeling clean, soft, and comfortable.
For the next two years, I continued learning, testing, and refining the recipe until I had created a bar I was proud to use with my own family.
How Goat Milk Stuff Became a Family Business
In January 2008, our family van was badly damaged after gasoline was accidentally placed in a diesel fuel pump. The repair was an enormous expense for our family of ten living on one income.
I decided to make extra soap and sell it to help cover the cost.
At the time, starting an online business was not as simple as it is today. Between homeschooling, homesteading, caring for the goats, and raising eight children, I taught myself how to build the first Goat Milk Stuff website.
The website alone did not immediately bring customers, so the children and I carried soap with us and told people about it wherever we went. Later that year, we sold our soap at a local apple festival and gave away samples with our business cards.
Customers began sharing the soap with friends and family, and word continued to spread.
In the following years, we traveled to festivals, filled online orders, milked the goats twice a day, and made more soap as quickly as we could without compromising its quality.
Building the Goat Milk Stuff Farm
Goat Milk Stuff began on three acres in Charlestown, Indiana. As the business and goat herd grew, we realized we needed more room.
In 2011, we purchased the land that would become our current 36-acre farm in Scottsburg, Indiana. There were no Goat Milk Stuff buildings on the property when we purchased it, so everything had to be built from the ground up.
The Soaproom was the first major building completed, and we began making and shipping soap from it in September 2012. The goat barns, family home, baby barn, milking parlor, and additional farm buildings followed as the business and herd grew.
Today, our dairy goats live on the same farm where our soap is made. Their milk travels only a few hundred feet from the milking parlor to the Soaproom and is often made into soap the same day it is collected.
That short journey gives us direct knowledge of the goat milk used in our products—from the daily care of the goats to the handling of the milk.

What Makes Goat Milk Stuff Different?
We Use Milk From Our Own Goats
We do not purchase anonymous bulk goat milk from a distant supplier and have to transport it to our farm.
We do not use powdered goat milk in any of our soaps.
Our raw goat milk comes from our own registered Alpine and Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. We work with the herd every day, monitor their health, and know each goat by name.
We Make Our Soap From Scratch
Our goat milk soap is made in our dedicated Soaproom on the family farm. We begin with raw goat milk and carefully selected oils and fats rather than purchasing a premade soap base.
Making soap from scratch gives us control over the formula and allows us to create the rich, creamy lather our customers appreciate.

Goat Milk Stuff has changed a great deal since I made that first batch of soap in our kitchen.
