Goat milk soaps are renowned for their luxurious feel and skin-nourishing properties. But when it comes to choosing the type of goat milk to use in the soap-making process, the debate between raw and powdered goat milk is a common one.

At Goat Milk Stuff, we use raw milk from our own goats in all of our goat milk soaps, and powdered goat milk in our lip balms, deodorants and lotions. Both forms of goat milk have their benefits for different products, but, in our experience of soap making, nothing beats the hydration and skin advantages that natural raw goat milk has.

Is Raw Goat Milk Harder to Work With?

Raw goat milk is a natural product and can easily be compromised, making it much more difficult to work with than powdered goat milk. That doesn’t scare us though! The quality and moisturizing properties of soap you get from using raw goat milk far outweigh the challenges.

The biggest risk when using raw goat milk happens during the saponification process of turning the oils and milk into the soap. This stage of soap making generates heat which could damage the integrity of the profile of the goat milk if not done correctly. Thankfully, years of testing and research means that we’ve perfected our saponification to create the richly nourishing and hydrating goat milk soap you know and love.

"Love your goat milk Oatmeal Milk & Honey soap! Love the scent and lathers great! I started using when having chemo treatments as my body was extremely dry and flakey. The soap is gentle and nourishing." - Janet C.

Why Would You Use Powdered Goat Milk?

Although we never use powdered goat milk in our goat milk soap, powdered goat milk has its place in other products, particularly those products that don’t go through saponification.

Raspberry Goat Milk Lip Balm
"Love the Raspberry Lip Balm. Conditions and moisturizes my lips. Has a great smell too!" - Amanda B.

Saponification is the process in which triglycerides are combined with a strong base to form the core fatty acids of soap. Without saponification, raw goat milk would eventually grow bacteria, therefore spoiling the product.

Lip balms, lotions and deodorants are examples of our goat milk product range which do not go through saponification and therefore use powdered goat milk as their base.
