If you're struggling with sinus congestion for whatever reason, you're probably searching for some relief. Sinus congestion isn't only inconvenient, but it can be painful and make it difficult to sleep. There are decongestants on the market that can help dry up your sinus congestion. But is that what you really want to do?

My Personal COVID Story

Despite social distancing, mask-wearing, and lots of handwashing (with really great goat milk soap), I contracted COVID-19 in the Fall of 2020. (And nope, we still don't know where it came from.)

My doctor told me that it was very important to keep my secretions as thin as possible while I was sick. This was best done with drinking lots and lots of fluids. But my doctor also strongly suggested I avoid cough syrups and decongestants because they are designed to dry you out and as a result, they thicken your mucus. My doctor did not want any extra mucus thickening and hanging around in my lungs.

*Please be aware this is NOT medical advice, I am just sharing what I was told for my particular situation.

And so rather than using over-the-counter decongestants and cough suppressants, I instead used humidifiers and our Cold Relief Lotion.

Do Natural Remedies Actually Work?

Our Cold Relief lotion uses eucalyptus essential and menthol to naturally help you decongest. I apply it to my chest, my back, the bottom of my feet (where it can be easily absorbed), under my nose, and on my wrists. (I put it on my wrists so that when I am trying to sleep I can put my wrists to my nose and try to inhale.)

But does it really help?

A 2009 study found that 1,8 cineole (the main component in eucalyptus oil) is an effective and safe treatment for sinusitis. It can help clear airways of mucus and can work as a natural cough suppressant.

My personal bout with COVID-19 resulted in 7 weeks of coughing, but I never needed to go to the hospital and I never had trouble breathing.

How To Use Cold Relief

We recommend applying Cold Relief to the following areas:

  • your chest
  • your back
  • the bottom of your feet (where it is easily absorbed)
  • under your nose
  • around the sinus area (avoid eyes!)

And before bed, we also put some on the inside of our wrists so that we can sniff it while we're trying to fall asleep.

Is Cold Relief Safe for Babies and Children?

I have always used Cold Relief on my babies and grandbabies as long as they don't have any ingredient allergies. I always put it on the bottoms of their feet and their backs and chests.

Just be careful not to get it in their eyes because the menthol will burn and sting their eyes. It's also a good idea to keep it away from their hands so they don't accidentally rub it into their eyes.

  • Soothing and Effective for Colds and Congestion

GMS' Cold Relief really helps. Gave Cold Relief sticks to all my kids for Christmas to help thwart off the side effects of the colds my grandchildren seem to be passing around to each other. The adult children appreciated it too when they too came down with colds caught from their children or nieces. Helped them breathe better and it was also soothing. Definitely recommend giving it a try. The stick makes it easy to apply as well.

  • Opens Nasal Passages and Much Better Than Petroleum-Based Products

I just love the Cold Relief Solid Goat Milk Lotion. The scent really opens up the nasal passages. I really like that it’s in a lotion form. The solid lotion is so much better then using a petroleum base product.
