I began my journey to a more natural life over 20 years ago when my children were very little. I started with healthier food and moved to healthier skin care and natural cleaning. I created Goat Milk Stuff to be able to share the natural items I created for my family with others.
What Exactly is Organic?
According to Dictionary.com, there are two definitions of the word 'organic.'
1. relating to or derived from living matter.
2. (of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents.
At Goat Milk Stuff, we always seek to use the most natural, organic ingredients possible. We harvest our own hay from our fields that are never sprayed with any chemicals. We feed our goats the most natural diet possible.
We follow sustainable, organic, farm management. And we purchase ingredients that are as simple as possible and derived from living matter.
But we are not a certified organic farm. To discover why, let's talk about organic certification.
What is Organic Certification?
According to the USDA, to receive the USDA organic certification...
Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible. Produce can be called organic if it's certified to have grown on soil that had no prohibited substances applied for three years prior to harvest.
That definitely applies to our farm - so why don't we get our goat milk certified organic?
Very simple - time and money. The paperwork and thousands of dollars keeps us from getting our certification.
Time. We're working so hard caring for our animals, tending our gardens, making quality products, shipping orders quickly, and providing excellent customer service. Farms that are certified organic often have a person dedicated to managing that organic certification and filling out the appropriate paperwork. Who has time for extra government paperwork? Not me. I'd prefer to spend my time with my family, my animals, and my customers over time with additional paperwork.
Money. We also work very hard to keep our prices as low as possible for our customers. We strive to keep reasonable prices while still paying our employees well and keeping our business healthy and sustainable for the long-term. Getting certified organic would require us to raise our prices. We simply don't think the benefit of organic certification is worth it.
There is one other issue that keeps me from getting our goat milk certified organic. To be honest, over time, I have become less of a believer in organic certification. I see farms that are thousands of acres certified as organic. While they technically meet the definition, to me they do not follow sustainable organic practices.
They are doing the bare minimum to meet the certification. They are not caring for the land and building the soil the way I believe organic farms should do.
I would personally rather eat food and use soap from farmers that take their natural practices seriously than from corporations who pay for organic certification just to increase their profit margins.
At Goat Milk Stuff, we work hard to put in the effort needed to excel. We want our farm to become more sustainable, environmentally-friendly, and healthy over time. We don't have organic certification, but we consider ourselves organic.
Natural Can Be Just as Beneficial as Organic
Do natural products have to be certified organic to be good for you? We believe the answer is no.
Some of the best ingredients for your skin and hair can come from natural sources that haven’t been certified organic. For example, you don’t need an organic goat milk lotion to reap the benefits of the ingredients.
Our solid goat milk lotion is all natural and is just as nourishing as any organic product. If you want the benefits of an organic product without paying the price tag, seek natural companies like Goat Milk Stuff that use high-quality ingredients.
"Unscented goat milk lotion is all I put on my face, neck, & feet. All the benefits of goat milk wonders & still have the option of fragrance if I choose." - Melody O.
What Exactly are 'Natural' Products?
I've been using the word 'natural' but I haven't exactly defined it. I previously approached the issue of what constitutes a natural product in much more detail in the blog post titled, "What Does 'Natural Soap' Mean?" In that article, I write:
There are many soaps available online that are listed as “natural soap” or “all natural soap”. But what does that really mean?
Since there is no universal definition or standard of identity for the term “natural soap”, it is not regulated by the government, and soapmakers and marketers can use the term as loosely or as strictly as they wish. Because of this, there are a couple of different loose definitions that exist.
Many people believe that a natural soap should only use ingredients that are easily pronounced, easily procured, and easily recognizable.
Others believe that natural soap should only use ingredients that are plant-derived. If an ingredient comes out of a laboratory then they would not consider the product to be “all-natural”.
Companies that recognize that the “natural” soap market is profitable often try to make claims of being natural. Because no government agency is currently policing the term “natural soap” in marketing or packaging, consumers need to do their own research.
At Goat Milk Stuff, we try to be as transparent and natural as possible. If you have any questions about any of the ingredients that we use, please ask. We try to balance the use of certified organic ingredients with being able to offer a soap that the average family can afford.
We believe everyone should have access to healthy, natural soap that doesn't damage your skin or introduce potentially harmful ingredients.
Organic, Natural Products are Good for Your Skin
