What Goat Milk Soap is Best to Use on My Face?

People ask me quite often which soap and lotion I use on my face. (But what they really want to know is what they should use on their face.)

Let's start with me. I don't have very sensitive skin, so I am able to use all the different soap scents on my face. Years ago, before I started making (and using) our goat milk soap, after I washed my face, my skin would feel "tight". I didn't even really realize it at the time. But once I started washing my face with our goat milk soap, I noticed the difference and that my skin doesn't tighten, but stays feeling soft.

"Purity allowed me to eliminate my expensive face wash, pump shower soap, and shaving cream. I use lotion maybe three times a week opposed to after every shower. My face usually breaks out with soap, not with Purity. My face feels soft and looks brighter. I can't say enough about these amazing, natural products. Finally, a natural product that actually produces results, and immediately. My hat is off to Goat Milk Stuff." - Michelle W.

Exfoliation for Your Face

Over the years, I've altered what I use. Currently, I use a Peppermint Luffa to wash my face. I use the peppermint because it is very uplifting which helps wake me up, but also because peppermint essential oil is supposed to improve circulation. And I love the exfoliating that the luffa provides.

"The Peppermint Luffa Soap is wonderful. I even use it for my face - Thank you for another great product!" - Doris R.

If you're not a fan of minty scents, we make two other scented luffas year-round, Oatmeal Milk & Honey and Tea Tree. Also, you can usually find some other luffa scents in our available Limited Editions.

Our Oatmeal Milk & Honey Luffa combines our most popular goat milk soap scent with the natural exfoliation provided by the luffa sponge.

"I have enjoyed using the Oatmeal Milk Honey Goat Milk Luffa. Love the scent, but also the gentle scrubbing effect. It can be used on the face carefully once or twice a week as well as in the shower wherever you might need to soften the skin. I wear sandals during the warm months and this helps keep the feet in good shape. Thank you for the amazing products you produce." - Dianne A.

The Tea Tree Luffa is made with tea tree essential oil which is believed to have antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. The Tea Tree Luffa is very popular with our customers who struggle with acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

"Where have these been all my life! I just tried the Luffa Tea Tree soap and I am in love! I use it on my face and my skin has never looked better. I have super sensitive skin and am prone to breakouts but this soap has been a game changer!" - Amy V.

Moisturizing Your Face

For most of the year, that's all that I use on my face. In the winter, we heat our house with wood and so it can get pretty dry. During those months, when I get out of the shower, I dry off and then rub some lotion on my hands and smooth it over my face. I personally use a large stick in a custom blend of lavender orange that we make just for me. But if I didn't have that, I would probably use the Almond (because I love that smell).

"Desperate times call for desperate measures. I’ve always had extremely sensitive skin and had to be very selective with what I put on my face. A few years ago, I had a radical hysterectomy and my skin dried out, severely. I tried every lotion, potion, home remedy, kitchen pantry concoction and otc product from creams, oils and lotions to doctor prescribed skincare. When I say nothing worked, I mean, NOTHING worked. I was dry, scaly and patchy and my makeup looked terrible, and most of the items I used in attempts to make my skin better only made it worse. I started researching goat milk products after coming across another brand of goat milk lotion during a recent road trip with my husband. While searching, I came across GMS and placed my first order at the beginning of April 2023. After receiving my products in the mail (just a couple of days later), I used the goat milk soap and lotion on my face before bed and immediately felt a difference. My skin did not feel dry or tight or irritated after washing. I have used the GMS Lavender Lotion on my face twice a day since ordering and my skin has never looked or felt better!! A week after my initial order, I ordered more lotion and other products and have my family using the GMS products also. My face is smooth and supple and the dry patches are GONE, even the tricky patch on the left side of my nose!!! My wrinkles also look less prominent, which is a huge plus! The GMS Lavender Lotion is the real deal!!! Initially, I ordered out of desperation because nothing else had worked, until now! GMS, thank you for saving my skin! You’ve gained a customer for life!!!" - Aubrey J.

If I'm washing my face out of the shower, I will use whatever liquid hand soap I have at the bathroom sink (usually Almond, Lavender, or Lemongrass).

Using Liquid Goat Milk Soap
"I am constantly washing my hands when cooking and my skin was feeling so dry. I tried GMS and my skin has never been so soft! I use Oatmeal Milk & Honey liquid soap in the kitchen and bar soap in the bath. I even use it to wash my face!" - Jan W.

And that's really all I use on my face.

What Goat Milk Soap Should You Use on Your Face?

So what should you use? It depends on your skin.

If you don't have sensitive skin, choose a soap scent and a lotion scent that appeals to you. All of the soaps have the same amount of goat milk, so they are all equally moisturizing and beneficial for your face.

Goat Milk Soaps for Your Face if You Have Sensitive Skin

But if you do have any skin sensitivities or problems, you can do some experimenting to see what soap your skin responds to the best. I would first start with an unscented soap so you can get a baseline. (Don't forget that we have smaller soap sizes while you are experimenting.)

Hewitt washing his face with goat milk soap
"I have used your soaps for years for face and body and “strayed” the last year because I work for a professional product brand and can get skincare for free. My face was getting red again, would react to the slightest touch (sensitivity) was tight and dry, fine lines and pores more noticeable. I immediately went back to the Calendula soap and it instantly transformed my skin! This is the best facial cleanser! I also tried the lotion stick for crows feet around my eyes, it works the best out of everything I’ve tried! This time around I also tried the OMH fragrance for the first time and I’m obsessed! It makes me happy every time I catch a whiff :)" - Carolyn B.

We have 3 different unscented formulas:

The Purity and Calendula are very popular facial soaps, but some women with sensitive skin prefer to use the Castile because it is the most mild soap that we make. The Castile is the soap we suggest for newborns, so it is very gentle on sensitive facial skin.

Purity Goat Milk Soap
"Love the Purity soap for my sensitive face. It seems to help w/ the occasional eczema that I get. Love that it is unscented." - Sandy S.

If your skin is oily or acne prone, after experimenting with the unscented soaps, the Tea Tree or Activated Bamboo Charcoal are both great soaps to try and many people find that they help with breaking out.

Ashton holding Tea Tree Goat Milk Soap
"So there are 3 soaps I buy from GMS specifically as a face soap. Calendula, Activated Bamboo Charcoal, and you guessed it Tea Tree! While I enjoy all three of these soaps, I'd have to rank Tea Tree as number one just for its powerful active ingredients and acne fighting capabilities. It's a wonderful body soap as well, it gets you clean and doesn't leave your skin dry. P.S. For others w/ sensitive skin worried about using a coconut oil based soap on your face, my experience was Tea Tree didn't have any adverse effects and neither did Bamboo Charcoal." - Ashley M.

Combination skin can use any of these soaps as well.

The best way to find out which soap works best for you is to try the different soaps and see which one your skin prefers. We have standard bars and travel bars available if you would like to test smaller amounts of the different soaps. If you find a goat milk soap that works well for your face and skin, our Unscented goat milk soaps, Tea Tree, and more soaps, are available in the mega size if you prefer a larger bar.

As always, if you have skin allergies, try the soap on a small patch of skin first to make sure you are not allergic.

When it comes to which lotion to use on your face, the same rules apply. If you have any sensitivity, I would start with the Unscented lotion. Try the smallest size to see if it works well for your skin. If your skin isn't overly sensitive, simply choose a scent that you enjoy!

Unscented Solid Goat Milk Lotion
"I use the products you make because of the lack of chemicals. I have sensitive skin and found that by using your soaps, especially the fragrance free liquid soap, laundry detergent and bath chips that I am as chemical free as I can get and I really appreciate that. The (Unscented) solid lotion I use on my face as it is the one thing I can use that doesn't make my face itch. I will be buying from you for a long time and thank you for all the great products available. Everything I have bought is excellent." - Molly L.

No matter which individual scent you use on your face, remember that it's important to use natural products that avoid chemicals.

Hi Sgane, we have a luffa soap that you may want to try. That’s what I use to exfoliate. You might also want to try the unscented lotion to see if that helps. I said a prayer you find a solution that works for you! :) PJ

I have dry sensitive skin due to rosacea during menopause and it causes cheek acne. I recently started using your unscented goat milk soap. It cleans my pores well but my skin turns scaly as it dries. Should I exfoliate with the goat milk soap? If so, how?

Goat Milk Stuff

Hi Kathy – Yes, it is. I just use the regular soap or luffa on my face. Those are available at all times. We offer the custom lotions a few times a year. Make sure you’re signed up to receive emails from us and you will be notified. You can do that at https://goatmilkstuff.com/newsletter Hope that helps!

Hi Marlene, this is not correct. The cotton bag is to label the soap but should be removed before getting the soap wet. If you are looking for more exfoliation we do offer soap savers that you can use that can get wet and apply to your skin. Our Luffas also offer great exfoliation. :)

I am using purity. A large bar. It is in the fabric bag. I was told to lather up IN THE BAG and then rub bag over my face gently. Is this correct keeping the soap in the bag the whole time.
