Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that affects people of all skin tones. It occurs when an excess of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, is produced in certain areas. This results in darker patches or spots on the skin.

Most commonly represented as skin patches that are darker than the surrounding skin color, these dark patches can appear anywhere on the body, but are most regularly found on the face, neck and hands and come in all shapes and sizes.

"I had really bad wind burn from fishing that never went away, and I can see the dark patches lightening up from using the Purity soap daily with the Tea Tree moisturizer. I couldn't be happier!" - Holly N.

While it can be frustrating and negatively impact self-esteem, understanding hyperpigmentation is the first step towards treating it.

Why Do People Have Hyperpigmentation?

There are several factors that can contribute toward someone having an excess build up of melanin and, therefore, showing the symptoms of hyperpigmentation, and these factors are, surprisingly, seldom linked to genetic or hereditary factors.

The main causes are:

  • Sun Exposure: Excessive sun exposure is the most common cause of hyperpigmentation. UV rays stimulate melanin production, leading to dark spots.

  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, menopause and certain birth control pills can cause hormonal fluctuations that trigger hyperpigmentation.
  • Inflammation: Acne, eczema and other skin injuries can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Medications: Some medications can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight and contribute towards dark spots.

How Can You Treat Hyperpigmentation?

While hyperpigmentation can be persistent, there are several treatment options available:

  • Sun Protection: Consistent use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential to prevent further darkening.
  • Over-the-Counter Products: Products that contain ingredients like hydroquinone, retinol, vitamin C, and niacinamide can help to fade dark spots.
  • Chemical Peels: These professional treatments can help remove the top layers of skin, revealing a more even complexion.
  • Microdermabrasion: The exfoliation technique can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of dark spots.
