Avocado Oil Benefits for Skin

Avocado oil has rapidly gained popularity thanks to its numerous health and beauty benefits. Derived from the fruit of the avocado tree, this nutrient-rich oil offers a plethora of advantages for both your overall well-being and the well-being of your skin.
We’ve been using avocado oil in our lotions and lip balms for a long time and the feedback from customers has been nothing but positive, and here we are going to explain why.
What is Avocado Oil?
Avocado oil is a natural oil that is extracted from the green, buttery pulp of the avocado fruit when the fruit is ripe.
This nutrient rich oil has been connected with a number of health benefits and is utilized in cooking as much as it is in skincare.
Where are Avocados Native To?
Avocados are native to south-central Mexico and parts of Central America and South America. Their native range extends from Mexico down to Cost Rica, and the Andean regions.
However, outside of their native origins, Avocados thrive in tropical and subtropical environments where the weather is consistently warm with temperatures contained within 16°C and 30°C . Colder temperatures can limit avocado tree growth with many varieties intolerant of frost. Avocado trees typically require 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day for healthy growth and fruit production, where humidity levels are between 60% and 80%.
With the vast global demand for avocados, it is believed that over 9,000,000 metric tons of the fruit are farmed every year; and here at Goat Milk Stuff, we are pleased to integrate this superfood into a selection of our products.
What is the Difference Between Unrefined and Refined Avocado Oil?
If you are perusing the grocery store shelves looking for avocado products, you’ll likely see a mix of unrefined avocado oil and refined avocado oil, but do you know what the difference is?
Unrefined avocado oil, often labelled as ‘virgin’ or ‘cold-pressed’ is the purest form of avocado oil. It is typically made by crushing the avocado pulp, and mixing it slowly before mechanically pressing the pulp to separate the oil from the pulp. This process is carried out with no heat, chemicals, or solvents; just pure manual pressing.
A vibrant emerald green color, through the presence of chlorophyll and carotenoids, unrefined avocado oil has a rich, buttery, and slightly nutty flavor. Packed with vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin D; it is often used in rich culinary foods, and it great for skincare.
Refined avocado oil undergoes further processing after the initial extraction is complete to remove the impurities and neutralize the flavor profile so that it is a more stable oil, suitable for heating.
That further processing is typically centered around degumming and bleaching to remove free fatty acids and color leaving it a lighter color which resembles a pale yellow. This refined oil is then suitable for heating up to 520°F, perfect for use as a cooking oil as well as use in roasting and frying.
What are the Benefits of Avocado Oil for the Skin?
Avocado oil, very much like avocados themselves, offer a wide range of benefits for your overall health. Some of the key benefits are:
- Avocado oil improves health. When monounsaturated fatty acids are absorbed into the body, either via oral consumption (eating) or absorption through the skin, they can help to lower bad cholesterol level and reduce the risk of heart disease.
- Avocado oil is rich in Vitamin E. Avocado oil is a great source of vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage caused by free radicals, meaning that with a healthy supply of Vitamin E you can combat oxidative stress, which is linked to various chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. When focusing on the benefits to the skin in particular, vitamin E is crucial in the role of activating T-Cells, which are key to fighting off infections and triggering the production of Collagen, which improves the elasticity in our skin.
- Avocado oil is rich in Vitamin K. Vitamin K is another superhero for the body that avocado oil is rich in. Essential for the production and activation of proteins in the body, vitamin K is beneficial for blood clotting and bone metabolism.
- Avocado oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Avocado oil can help reduce inflammation in the body which can help you to find a respite from conditions like arthritis.
Avocado oil also has a number of skin specific benefits. As a natural moisturizer, the oil of an avocado can help to prevent dryness and flakiness in skin, as well as help to combat the signs of aging.
While you should never use avocado oil as a replacement for sunscreen, avocado oil can provide some protection against UV damage due to its T-cell activation potential; but should always be used in collaboration with sunscreen that has a minimum protection of SPF15.
And if you are a sufferer of acne, whether in your teenage years or as a matured adult, then avocado oil can help to soothe acne-prone skin and reduce the redness and skin irritation that acne can bring.
Avocado oil is a versatile and beneficial natural ingredient that can enhance your skin health and overall wellbeing, so incorporating it into the products that we make can give you a host of benefits from hydration of the skin to bringing down the inflammation caused by skin irritants and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
