Cocoa Butter Benefits for Skin

When someone first mentions cocoa butter to you, you might be excused for thinking about a sweet, chocolatey flavored butter that can be spread on your toast, but it is actually an under-appreciated nature powerhouse that can elevate your skincare routine.
Here at Goat Milk Stuff, we believe that natural ingredients are the best and only way to optimize your skin, body and mind; and it is for this reason that we use cocoa butter in a wide range of our products from shampoo bars to lip balms. So let us take you through why Cocoa Butter is a deliciously scented gift from nature.
What is Cocoa Butter?
Cocoa butter is a pale-yellow, edible fat extracted from the cocoa bean. Also known as cacao butter, the cocoa bean is the seed of the cocoa tree which is the same plant that give chocolate its smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
But beyond the world of confectionary, cocoa butter is a much loved ingredient in skincare due to its rich emollient properties which keep skin supple hydrated and soft. It’s a natural fat, primarily composed of fatty acids like oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid, which are incredibly beneficial for nourishing and moisturizing your skin. At room temperature, it’s solid but melts easily at body temperature allowing it to be readily absorbed into the skin.
Unrefined cocoa butter is extracted from the cocoa bean through a process called hydraulic pressing, where the beans are ground into a paste, and then the oil is separated from the solid (cocoa powder is produced at some point too, of course!).
What is the Native Region of Cocoa Butter?
Cocoa butter is native to the tropical regions of Central and South America. For centuries, the indigenous populations of these areas have revered the cocoa tree, not just for its beans to make drinks and food, but also for the beneficial properties of the butter derived from them. Today, cocoa is cultivated in many tropical regions around the world, including West Africa, which is now a major producer to the Middle and Far East of the Asian Continent.
Does Cocoa Butter Remove Skin Pigmentation?
Cocoa butter is not known to be a skin lightener or to directly remove skin pigmentation. Its primary benefit for skin is in its moisturizing and emollient properties. While regular use of cocoa butter can improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks over time (often by blending them more seamlessly with the surrounding skin), it won’t bleach or remove hyperpigmentation like dark spots or sun damage. For issues with pigmentation you’d typically look for ingredients like vitamin C, or Alpha Arbutin.
What is the Difference Between Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter?
While cocoa butter and shea butter are both incredible moisturizers that offer a range of similar benefits, they have their obvious differences.
To start, while both are natural fats, shea butter is extracted from the nuts of the African Shea Tree, which as a native to the dry savannah belt of West and East Africa; putting its origins thousands of miles away from the South American roots of the Cocoa Tree.
But more than that, cocoa butter has a distinct chocolatey aroma, which is rich and mouth watering; whereas in contrast shea butter has a milder, nutty and slightly smoky bitterness to its scent, especially when the shea butter is unrefined.
Cocoa butter and shea butter are both rich in beneficial fatty acids such as stearic, linoleic, and palmitic acids. And the depth of vitamin presence in shea butter mirrors that of cocoa butter too, with a strong componentry of vitamins A, E and F.
This similarity in fatty acid profiles is what makes both of these butters intensely moisturizing for very dry skin, and beneficial to skin elasticity and the general glow of skin. Both are wonderful choices for natural skincare, and often personal preference or specific skin needs are the cause for selection of one over the other.
Does Cocoa Butter Tighten Skin?
While cocoa butter is a fantastic moisturizer and can improve the overall appearance and elasticity of your skin, it is important to set realistic expectations. Cocoa butter itself doesn’t possess properties that actively ‘tighten’ the skin in the way some cosmetic procedures or specific active ingredients might. However, by deeply moisturizing and improving skin’s suppleness, it can help to reduce the appearance of looseness, making skin look firmer and more toned. Well hydrated skin simply looks healthier and more youthful.
What are the Benefits of Cocoa Butter?
Cocoa butter has been used to promote skin health and suppleness for centuries. Moisturizing and nourishing, here are the benefits of cocoa butter:
- Cocoa butter provides deep hydration. Cocoa butter is amazing at keeping your skin healthy, hydrated and soft because it creates a barrier that locks in moisture. This protective barrier is made by the essential fatty acids found in this gorgeous vegetable fat, and will keep your skin soft and supple. Reducing skin dryness is the most popular benefit the cocoa butter offers, making it a very popular ingredient for body lotions, lip balm, and other skincare products.
- Cocoa butter is rich in antioxidants. Raw cocoa butter has lots of natural antioxidants that protect your skin from free radical damage caused by the sun and pollution. These antioxidants slow skin aging and can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, so your healthy skin can look youthful for longer!
- Cocoa butter has anti-inflammatory properties. Cocoa butter is helpful in calming irritated skin and can be beneficial for people who have eczema or psoriasis. This makes cocoa butter good for those with sensitive skin as well as dry skin.
- Cocoa butter may improves skin elasticity. Cocoa butter is packed with essential fatty acids that make your skin more elastic and firm. These properties can also repair skin damage and help reduce stretch marks and scars.
- Cocoa butter may enhances skin tone. Pure cocoa butter contains natural compounds that can help even out your skin tone and improve its overall appearance.
- Cocoa butter can help reduce the appearance of scars and marks. While it doesn’t remove them, consistent use of cocoa butter can help to improve the overall appearance of scars, stretch marks, and blemishes by hydrating the skin and promoting a more even texture.
All in all, cocoa butter is a fantastic ingredient for your skin that can help you achieve a healthy, glowing complexion!
