Jojoba Oil Benefits for Skin

We’re dedicated to bringing you the best of nature’s bounty for healthy, happy skin and hair, and one of the ingredients that we have infused into several of our products is Jojoba Oil. This incredible extract is a skincare superstar, and once you learn about its properties, you’ll understand why it is a staple in so many natural skincare and haircare routines.

What is Jojoba Oil?

Despite its common name, Jojoba ‘oil’ isn’t actually an oil in the traditional sense, but rather a liquid wax ester. This is a crucial distinction that explains why it is so incredibly beneficial for your skin and hair.

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of the Jojoba plant. Its unique chemical structure is remarkably similar to the natural sebum oil that our own skin produces. This bio-mimicry is what makes it so readily accepted and effective by our bodies, helping to balance and protect rather than just coat. It’s rich in vitamin E and vitamin B-Complex, as well as minerals like zinc, copper and chromium.

What is the Native Region of Jojoba Oil?

The Jojoba plant is a hardy, drought-resistant shrub that is native to the desert regions of southern Arizona, southern California, and northwestern Mexico. It thrives in harsh, arid climates where other plants struggle, making it an incredibly sustainable and resilient resource. Indigenous peoples of these regions have traditionally used jojoba for centuries for its various properties, including wound healing, skin conditioning, and even as a food source during times of scarcity.

Is Jojoba Oil Comedogenic?

Many people ask us if jojoba oil is comedogenic and they also ask us what comedogenic means, so let’s tackle both questions.

In the context of skincare and cosmetics, comedogenic refers to a substance or ingredient that has a tendency to clog pores.

The word ‘comedo’ is the singular for the medical term for a clogged hair follicle, with the plural being 'comedones'. One example of a comedo could be a blackhead spot, which is an open comedo, another example could be whitehead spots, which are closed comedones.

The word ‘Genic’ simply means ‘causing’ or ‘producing’. So a comedogenic ingredient is one that causes or promotes the formation of comedones (clogged pores).

Now that is addressed, we can look at whether jojoba oil is a comedogenic; and the short answer is "No, it is not". As a non-comedogenic, it has a very low likelihood of clogging pores because its structure is so similar to the skin natural sebum. Jojoba oil is easily absorbed and doesn’t sit on the skin’s surface, creating a barrier that can trap dirt and deal skin cells. This makes it an exceptional choice for almost all skin types, including acne-prone skin, oily skin and sensitive skin.

Can You Put Jojoba Oil Directly onto Hair?

Jojoba oil can be applied directly to the hair. Jojoba oil is a fantastic conditioner and treatment for your hair and scalp. Its unique composition means it doesn’t just sit on the top of the hair, but it can actually help to moisturize the scalp, dissolving excessive sebum and moisturizing dry and flaky scalps. It can also add a shine and gleam to hair strands which can make hair soft and manageable without being oily. As a natural frizz reducer, jojoba oil is a natural smoother to hair cuticles, and protectant against environment damage.

Is Jojoba Oil Good for Under Eyes?

Yes, jojoba oil can be wonderfully beneficial for the delicate skin under your eyes. Here are just a few of the reasons why:

  • Under eyes are prone to dryness: The skin around the eyes is thin and prone to dryness. Jojoba oil provides excellent hydration without being too heavy or greasy.
  • Reduces Appearance of Fine Lines: Well-hydrated skin naturally looks plumper and can help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While it won’t magically erase deep wrinkles, it can certainly improve the overall look and feel of the under-eye area.

Just remember, a little goes a long way. Gently pat a tiny drop around the orbital bone for best results; or if you are looking for to use jojoba oil in a broader fashion, check out one of our jojoba soaps.

What are the Benefits of Jojoba for the Skin?

Here are some of the benefits of jojoba oil for skin:

  • Jojoba oil keeps your skin soft and hydrated. Jojoba oil is like a drink of water for your skin. It goes deep into your skin to keep it feeling soft and supple. Jojoba oil is ideal for any skin type, from dry skin to oily skin, as it suppresses oil production in the skin while keeping your skin hydrated.
  • Jojoba oil helps prevent acne. Because jojoba oil doesn't clog pores, it's great for people with acne-prone skin and other inflammatory skin conditions. It can help reduce the appearance of breakouts and keep your skin clear. Products with anti-inflammatory properties should always be added to the skincare routine of those with acne-prone skin, and jojoba oil mimics human sebum without clogging pores or exacerbating acne.
  • Jojoba oil soothes irritated skin. If you have skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, jojoba oil can help reduce redness and swelling. It has natural anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties that can calm your skin, even during an allergic reaction.
  • Jojoba oil protects your skin from the sun. Jojoba oil has a natural sun protection factor (SPF) and vitamin E that can help shield your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays.
  • Jojoba oil fights signs of aging. Jojoba oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, which can help combat free radicals that cause premature aging. Using jojoba oil regularly can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Overall, jojoba oil is a versatile and effective natural ingredient that can help improve the health and appearance of your skin. With potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, organic jojoba oil, cold-pressed jojoba oil and other options are all deeply hydrating and beneficial for a broad range of skin types.
